Two different mobile coverage maps. Verizon vs Sprint. This is how you should develop your band BEFORE you sign with a major label. For an indie label it is not such a big deal. Too often bands are focused on the major music markets (LA, SF, Seattle Chicago, Austin, Boston, NY, DC) and they forget all of the places in between. That is where you will ultimately make your money. These are the places that will balance your tour and these are the places that will be supporters of your band LONG after NYC has tired of you.
Further to this point. Radio does not matter until a few records into your career. Radio is fickle and costs a LOT of money. Radio does not develop careers, it makes hits and hits generally do not last (nor their effect) much longer then a calendar year. Think of radio once you have developed the coverage map. Far to often we see bands that have radio hits, have sold hundreds of thousands of records and can barely fill a 500 person club. If that is your band you are fucked. Next week a band will be playing the same venue who has sold 1/10th of what you have sold and will be playing to more people.
Do you want a career as an artist or a shot at fame.
The truth is that artists generally create art that is somewhat polarizing and somewhat ahead of its time. It is also true that if you are an artist you are going to be doing the same exact thing whether you are getting paid or not. Decide which one you are
